Privacy policy

This policy covers the Chula Vista Fire Damage website: what its request form asks for, what else arrives with a request, who sees it, and for how long we keep it.

Who we are

Chula Vista Fire Damage is a website that explains fire, smoke and soot damage and passes homeowners' requests to a restoration company. We are not a restoration company ourselves. We have no premises, so the way to reach us about this policy is the form on the contact page.

What the form asks for

The request form asks for the items below and nothing else. The ones marked optional can be left blank.

Your name. So whoever reads the request knows who they are replying to.
Phone number. The number a restoration company would use to reach you about the damage.
Email (optional). Used only when you prefer an answer in writing.
Where is the house? (optional). The neighbourhood or town, so the request goes to someone who works there.
What happened? Your own description of the fire and what it damaged, passed on as you wrote it.
Add photos (optional). Pictures of the damage, only if you choose to add them.
Which page the form was on. Your browser adds this one itself, so we know which guide you were reading when you wrote.

The form also has one hidden box that people never see. Only automated spam programs fill it in, and a request that arrives with it filled in is treated as spam.

What arrives with a request automatically

When a request is sent, your browser also passes along the internet address your connection came from, a short description of the browser and device, and the page that linked you to this site if there was one. They are kept with the request and help us sort genuine requests from automated junk.

Before a request is accepted, the form runs a security check from our hosting provider that tells people from automated programs. The check reads information about your browser to do that, and its result is passed along with the request.

Visiting the site

Each page view is counted by this site's own server. When a page loads, the server notes which page it was, the time, the kind of browser, the rough area and network the connection came from, and whether the page loaded properly. A small script on the page then sends four more things:

That a page was opened. The script reports nothing else happening on the page.
Which page it was, as the part of the address after the domain, with anything after a question mark cut off.
The domain of the site whose link brought you here, if your browser passes it on. Never the page on that site.
How wide the browser window is, in pixels, which tells us whether pages are read on phones or on bigger screens.

Your internet address is not stored. It is combined with the date and a secret value into a code that cannot be turned back into the address and changes every day, so a visit can be counted once without being traced to you.

There is no Google Analytics, no advertising tag and no social media pixel on any page, and this site sells no advertising.

Where a request goes

A request is stored in a database run by our backend provider and emailed, through an email delivery service, to the people who run this site. Photos are kept in private storage, and the email carries links to them that stop working after seven days.

No restoration company receives requests from this site yet, so a request goes no further than the people who run it.

Beyond what this section describes, we share a request with nobody unless a law obliges us to.

Phone calls

This site has no phone number today, so no calls reach it and nothing is recorded. If a number is added, the plan is a voicemail line whose greeting says the call is recorded before anything is, because California law needs every party's consent to record a call. A message left on it, with the number it came from and the time, would be kept and passed on the same way as a form request.

Keeping and deleting

There is no automatic deletion yet. A request, and anything that arrived with it, is kept until you ask for it to be deleted.

Your choices

To see the details we have on file for you, get them fixed, or have them erased, use the form on the contact page and start your message with the words "privacy request". Once a request has been passed to a restoration company, that company holds its own copy, and you may also need to ask it directly.

Children

Nobody under 13 should use the request form, and we don't knowingly keep a child's details.

Changes to this policy

This page is edited whenever the form, the phone line or anything else it describes is edited, and the date at the top is moved to match. Anything else about using the site is in the terms of use.
